Poikiloderma of Civatte

Well, bugger. I'm pretty sure I've figured out what is going on with the skin on my neck and chest, and it isn't simple aging. Well yes, it is aging, but something else added on.

I grew up in the desert southwest, and sometimes used sunscreen. I didn't diligently start using sunscreen until I was in my late teens, although I wasn't an avid sunbather. I have strawberry blond hair, blue eyes, and fair skin, so a deep golden tan just wasn't in the cards for me. But I did get my share of sunburns.

When I did start to regularly use sunscreen, I focused on my face. I really didn't pay any attention to my neck or chest. Weeeell, now I'm seeing the consequences.

My oldest son had a lacrosse tournament yesterday in Santa Cruz. It was a beautiful sunny day in a gorgeous beach town, about 80 degrees with a nice ocean breeze. I was prepared...lots of sunscreen and a very wide brimmed straw sun hat, long sleeves. When we got home around 10pm last night, I took a sho…

Birthdays on a Diet

My baby boys turned 13 on Sunday. I'm the Mom of three teenagers! And six teenagers, including my wonderful stepchildren!

Anyway, this is not a post to talk about how ancient I've become...it's about how I handled my diet on the day of the birthday. I always make my kids a yummy cake: flavor, icing, and topping of their choice. Since the twins are spring babies, they usually go for fresh strawberries which are in season. This year was no different, so I made a chocolate double layer cake with vanilla frosting and a double layer of strawberries.

Now with Atkins this time around, sweet treats have not been a problem for me. I used to have much more of a sweet tooth, but after the twins were born, my sweet tooth inexplicably vanished. Poof! Our bodies can do some crazy things after childbirth, but that one was unexpected. And welcome, actually! It has made Atkins just that much easier.

However, I'm a bit superstitious. I feel that it's bad luck to not have a bite of your child's cake on their birthday. So in my case, I had a bite of each one of their pieces. Sure, it probably knocked me out of ketosis, but IMO celebrating with your babies is much more important that a minor diet setback. And yes, that's one of my sweet little ones drooling in the background over his cake.
